    ... and ooohhhh the sustain

I wanted to love this guitar the first time I played it. It was already love at first sight, that was a given. The crop circles are unique. Not flashy like a pearl or abalone, but classy and understated. Full of craftsmanship and intrigue. The instrument fits my body like a glove. The beveled edge makes this rather large guitar as easy to envelop as a grand concert, but with total comfort. When I rest during practice, I can cuddle it like a good friend, then it’s back to work. I am used to a slender neck, like on a Taylor or and Ibanez hollow body. The Freja has some bulk. A floating thumb might not cut it when stretching for a G. But once you get a feel for the neck, it is a thing of beauty. The sanded back has a little sheen but it is reduced just enough for your hand to slide nicely. No sticking even when I played it outside in the most humid air of the year thus far. The sound is superb, but with the stock A’didario strings not too refined. It’s balanced, but can raise the register when needed. I prefer a slightly more mellow tone, so I switched to some nanoweb Phosphor Bronze and that did the trick for me, a more mellow mid-range with plenty of punch at both ends. The sustain, oh my goodness that sustain. This guitar will ring all night. I was shocked at low long the D string will hold the note. You get to a point where you would swear that you aren’t hearing it anymore, but it’s still there.

The guitar came set up with a very low relief. But it loves to perform in this configuration. Easy to fret and no buzzing. Certainly no more that 0.002 inch and no buzz suggests fine craftsmanship, and spot on intonation. Simply amazing.

This guitar can be strummed moderately, but in my opinion prefers a gentle touch. The slightest flick sends the strings singing, and they do sing beautifully. The fit and finish is excellent. The frets could be more honed, but that is a simple job, and they are by no means unruly.

I highly recommend the Andrew White Freja NB100. If you are like me, you will be very satisfied, and perhaps even in love, once you get to know her!
