Daily Scale Sequence Warmup

By: Josh Lucas

These are some scale sequence warmups that I do daily.

For the picking patterns, I put the patterns that I use when I’m practicing my legato (hammer-on, pull-off) technique. I chose to show these patterns, because they are the most difficult to master at first. I would recommend going through the scale with alternate picking first. Later on, you can even have a little extra fun by trying them with hybrid picking.

I don’t like to play scales, or sequences verbatim in my lead playing–but they’re good for teaching your fingers to mix it up a little, rather than going straight up and down scales–which can be a good thing sometimes, but definitely not all the time. It will also build dexterity in your left hand, and coordination between your hands. Have fun!
